MATHS TIPS

Handy Hints for Maths….Counting is the basis of all maths at primary school. We encourage all parents to take every opportunity at home to count with their children.  In Term 1 there is a major focus at all levels at being able to count accurately. Counting involves being able to count by ones and as students’ progress skip counting is introduced. Research states that counting backwards is JUST AS IMPORTANT as counting forwards.

Things you can do at home to help your child become a confident counter.

  • Count out loud with your child starting from different numbers.
  • Allow your child to write the counting sequence, discussing any patterns noticed.
  • Count backwards with a calculator. Type in a number to start with, press the ‘-1’ key then press the = key. Continue to press = key to see the numbers count backwards.
