This term in reading, we will continue to work on getting knowledge ready before reading, shifting from a written format to a short, sharp mental process. Students will be exposed to more challenging texts to extend their thinking and ability to connect with unfamiliar topics. In spelling, students will build on their vocabulary through our spelling program ‘Words Their Way,’ anchor charts and topic/class word walls. Ongoing questioning strategies will be a focus throughout the reading of the text and comprehension. In writing, students will continue to explore different text types such as information reports, narratives, persuasive and procedural texts. In term 2, we will be focusing on writing. Students will be given opportunities to build their confidence and skills in speaking and listening through whole and small group activities.

During term two, we will be building upon the number fluency and counting strategies established in term one. These understandings will be extended to include addition, subtraction, capacity, money and interpreting data. Mathematics will be taught on a daily basis.

Grade three will be focusing on sentence structure. We will explore how the same information can be ordered in a sentence in different ways and how to turn a statement into a question by changing the order of the words.

Students are expected to read for 20 minutes every night and to document their reading in their Home Reading book. When possible, parents and carers are encouraged to read with students and use questions prompts and tips found in the Home Reading books. Students are also asked to complete a mental maths activity each night to help reinforce the various maths topics covered in class. They are also encouraged to complete ‘Today’s Number’ activity sheet to reinforce number fluency. From time to time students may also be given additional tasks to support class work.
